a digital electrical signal input; an optical signal input; a digital driver coupled to the digital electrical signal input; and a modulator coupled to the optical signal input and the digital driver, wherein the modulator is configured to generate a quadrature amplitude modulated signal, and wherein there is no digital-to-analog converter positioned between the digital electrical signal input and the modulator.
