898,611. Sliding clasp fasteners. OPTIHOLDING A.G. Feb. 5, 1959 [Feb. 6, 1958], No. 4151/59. Class 44. In a method for making a sliding clasp fastener from a molecularly orientable plastics material, for example polyamide threads, polyurethane threads or the like, an unstretched thread of the plastics material having any cross-section, is stretched by means of a shaping pressure exerted transversely to the length of the thread, the shaping pressure forming serially disposed teeth having tips broadened longitudinally to the length of the thread and between the teeth, curved connection pieces which curve in the opposite direction to that in which the teeth point, the thread being subsequently woven with or sewn to a textile stringer tape. As shown, unstretched polyamide thread 1, of preferably round crosssection is passed between rollers 2, 3 to produce teeth 7 the roller 2 being provided with uniformly distributed teeth 4 and the roller 3 being provided with a smooth periphery 3a having side flanges 3b which bridge the space between the rollers and also overlap the teeth 4 of the roller 2. The teeth 4 are provided with off-sets 4a, 4b or as shown in Fig. 7, with projections and recesses 4c, 4d. The roller 3 may be provided with a profiled periphery as shown in Fig. 5. The thread 1 is first passed through a second pair of rollers 9, 10 provided with grooves 11 and projections 12 respectively, to produce mushroom-shaped heads on the teeth 7 and an arcuate form to the parts 8 of the thread. Another pair of rollers 15, 16 associated with the rollers 9, 10 and moving perpendicularly thereto carries the thread forward by means of teeth and also forms by means of a disc attached to the roller 16 a groove 20 in one side of the thread, the final form of the thread being as shown in Figs. 9 and 10 or 11. The groove 20 locates a stitching thread by which the fastener thread is sewn to a stringer tape. The groove 20 may be dispensed with. The profiled fastener thread may be weaved directly with a stringer tape. |
