Disclosed are an apparatus for automatically detecting a violent act using a recorded image, and a method therefor. To this end, the present invention relates to an apparatus for detecting a violent act to detect a violent act using irregularities of movement among people, comprising: an image acquiring unit for acquiring multiple pieces of image information, which are recorded by a video camera; a person tracking unit for detecting and tracking a person from the image information to track a location and a size among people; a group-of-people determining unit for generating information of group of people based on the location and the size information among people; a movement-of-people analyzing unit for dividing information of group of people by a unit of multiple images, and extracting a motion vector of each area; and a violent act determination unit for determining whether a violence and an abduction occur by identifying a motion state and state transition conditions by using a motion vector of each of the extracted areas. Accordingly, the present invention is capable of determining whether a violence and an kidnapping occur even when multiple people are present and thereby improving surveillance efficiency of a CCTV monitoring person.
