Provided are an image processing device capable of color difference enhancement or structure enhancement according to changes in the color of the mucosa, etc. that can occur during atrophy of the stomach due to atrophic gastritis, and an operation method therefor. A base image is created from RGB image signals. The (B/G) ratio between the B image signal and the G image signal is calculated and the (G/R) ratio between the G image signal and the R image signal is calculated. On the basis of the base image, a frequency component enhanced image, in which the frequency component corresponding to an abnormal section that differs from normal sections is enhanced, is generated. On the basis of the (B/G) ratio and the (G/R) ratio, a compositing ratio representing the ratio for compositing the frequency component enhanced image with the base image is set. The frequency component enhanced image is composited with the base image using the set compositing ratio to generate a structure enhanced image in which structures of the abnormal section are enhanced. |
