A machine for erecting cartons and filling them has means for feeding each erected carton to a filling section such that the carton enters the filling section whilst moving parallel to an edge of its upper open end, and pivoting means at the filling. section for moving the carton about an axis parallel to said edge so that flaps defining the mouth of the carton can engage over articles awaiting to be packaged or a shoot through which the articles can be passed. The machine has a hopper section 1, Fig. 1, containing a stack of flat-folded cartons 3, and a reciprocable pusher plate 27 for moving the lowermost carton of the stack to the carton erecting section 4. Wedge shaped members 30, 31 enter the carton, as it moves into the erecting section 4, to partially open the carton. Thereafter, a pin 40 enters the partially opened carton and then moves upwardly to fully erect the carton. The bottom side flaps 5, 6 are closed by oscillating arms 45, 46 and the broad bottom flaps 7 and 8 are closed by oscillating arms 52, 54. A reciprocating pusher plate 28 moves the erected carton to the filling section 13. The filling section 13 comprises a cage 63, Figs. 1 and 5, formed by a bent tube 64 pivoted about a shaft 68. As the erected box is pushed into this cage by a reciprocating pusher plate 28 the cage 63 rocks anticlockwise and the open end of the carton is thereby pushed over the discharge end of a shoot 74 surrounding a stack of articles 15 to be packaged. During this movement of the cage 63, a guide 75 maintains the broad top flap 11 in a slightly raised position and spreaders 76 act on the upper side flaps 9, 10 to hold them apart. The articles 15 are pushed through the shoot 74 by a pushing device (not shown). The cage is then pivoted back into the position shown and a plate 29 pushes the filled carton out of the cage and on to an ejector table 77, Fig. 6. The table 77, consisting of a platform 78 with a perpendicularly attached side 79 formed by a roller conveyer, is then caused to turn to the position shown in broken lines in which position the roller conveyer 79 slopes downwardly. The filled carton thus automatically moves down the roller conveyer 79 and is ejected from the machine, for example on to an endless conveyer. The reciprocating pusher plates 27, 28, 29 are all mounted on a common shaft 16 and at the end of each working stroke this shaft rotates to move the plates 27, 28, 29 to a position below the cartons before making its return stroke. |
