[Also in Divisions B5, B8 and F2] Bags B are formed from lay flat tubing S of polythene in a machine comprising a guide plate 2, cam-operated heat-sealing jaws 4, 5 for welding the tube transversely at intervals, a cutter device 6, 7, vertically reciprocable cam-operated jaws 8, 9 for drawing the tube down past the cutters, and a vacuum plate 20 for transferring the cut-off bags to a position below a filling nozzle 21. The tubing is drawn continuously from a reel R by means of a drum 104 having pivotally mounted clamping pads 110 which are spring-urged away from the drum, but are cammed to engage the tubing against it during the major part of its rotation. A photo-electric scanner 27 operates a rockable stirrup 28 to ensure that printing on the tubing is correctly in register, and is itself adjustable on a rail 91. The vacuum plate 20 is mounted on a pipe 142 pivotable about its vertical axis under cam control. The bags may be formed from a web sheet longitudinally sealed. |
