The redistribution of alkyl groups in an alkyl lead compound or a mixture of alkyl lead compounds containing different alkyl groups is brought about by contacting a solution of the alkyl lead compound in ethylene dichloride, ethylene dibromide or a mixture thereof with boron trifluoride. Preferably a mixture of tetramethyl lead and tetraethyl lead is used. The boron trifluoride may be used in amounts from 0.05 to 0.2% by weight, based on the tetraalkyl lead. Other inert solvents, e.g. toluene, hexane, gasoline and kerosene may be present. |
