964,628. Nuclear reactors. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Oct. 10, 1962 [Oct. 26, 1961], No. 38339/62. Heading G6C. A lateral support column for the moderator structure of a nuclear reactor comprises a rigid central part and a peripheral part constructed of annular metal elements which surround the central part, the elements being arranged one above the other with each element resting on a cylindrical projection formed integrally with the central part, a small clearance being provided between pairs of successive elements. As shown in Fig. 1 the central part comprises hollow steel rods 1 screwed together; the lowermost rod is secured to the base-plate which supports the moderator by a ball joint provided with a conduit through which coolant can flow to the interior of rods 1, and the uppermost rod is provided with a screw and nut assembly by means of which it may be secured to a metal ring (not shown) which surrounds the top of the moderator structure. The rods 1 are surrounded by annular steel elements 3 which are supported on projections 13, Fig. 3a, formed on rods 1 by means of rings formed in two halves 12a, 12b. There is a clearance between rods 1 and elements 3 to form a coolant channel connected by conduits (not shown) to the interior of rods 1, and rings 12a, 12b are provided with hollowed out portions 14 to ensure continuity of the channel. The ends of elements 3 are preferably conical with a small clearance between adjacent elements, Fig. 3 (not shown). As shown in Fig. 3a the elements 3 may be of hexagonal crosssection and may be provided with longitudinal grooves into which keys 15 may fit to couple the support column to the adjacent moderator structure. |
