The invention comprises compounds of the formula:- in which Z represents the remaining atoms necessary to complete a carbocylic ring (e.g. benzene or cyclohexene) which may be substituted, e.g. by -SO3H, -OCH3, -CH3 or Cl; R represents alkyl; Y represents -S-, represents hydrogen or part of a double bond taken with T; T represents -V-W, =CH-U or V represents -CO-, -CS- or -SO2-; W represents alkyl, aryl, alkoxy, alkoxyalkyl, aryloxyalkyl, amino, arylamino or substituted aryl with or without an active coupling position on an aromatic ring, with the proviso that, where W represents arylamino, V must be -CS-; and U represents a hydroxyaryl group. The above compounds are prepared by reacting a hydrazone of the above formula, in which X and T represent hydrogen, with the corresponding appropriate sulphonic or carboxylic acids or acid chlorides or phenyl esters thereof; isocyanates; isothiocyanates or other hydrazones. N, N1-Dichloro-N, N1-bis (meta-nitrobenzenesulphonyl)-ethylenediamine is prepared by reacting meta-nitrobenzenesulphonyl chloride with ethylenediamine. N, N1-Dichloro-N, N1-dimethylbiphenylsulphone-4, 41-disulphamide is prepared by reacting N, N1-dimethylbiphenylene-sulphone-4, 41-disulphonamide with sodium hypochlorite solution and glacial acetic acid.
