980,604. Inductive control of vehicles. BARRETT ELECTRONICS CORPORATION. April 19, 1963 [April 23, 1962], No. 15589/63. Drawings to Specification. Heading H4U. A control system for causing a self-propelled vehicle (e.g. a lawn mower) to traverse in random manner an area defined by a loop of cable comprises a leader gear following system with the right-hand and left-hand sensing coils connected to the opposite steering motors whereby the vehicle sheers away from the cable instead of following it. As described the system has a reversing switch in the sensing coil connections whereby the mower may be made to follow the cable round the edges of the plot in known manner. The connections are then reversed so that when one of the sensing coils detects an approach to the cable, the relay in the opposite steering motor circuit is energized to steer the mower away from the cable. When the relay is deenergized as the mower leaves the vicinity of the cable, "off-centre " switches mounted adjacent to and actuated by the steering wheels maintain the mower on a substantially linear course. If the mower approaches the boundary cable head-on so that both steering relays are energized a circuit is completed to reverse the drive motor and apply right steering lock. A rear sensing coil stops the drive if the mower should then back up to another part of the boundary cable.
