The present invention concerns coated or encapsulated, thiosulfate salts which can be administered orally and without the side-effects commonly associated with orally administered formulations. It has been established that by delaying the release of a thiosulphate salt from a composition until the composition reaches the small intestine and lower regions of the GI tact (in other words by delaying contact between the thiosulfate salt of a composition and the small intestine and lower regions of the GI tract), a marked improvement in bioavailability following oral administration is achieved and the incidence of GI side effects such as catharsis and irritation are reduced.
