The invention relates to a method for pre-treating a surface of a substrate (50), in particular for a subsequent adhesive bonding process, wherein in the method an atmopheric-pressure plasma is generated by means of a discharge between electrodes (16; 5, 32) in a process gas (18), at least one of the electrodes is a sacrificial electrode (16), from which material is removed by the discharge, the removed material consists of particles and/or particles are produced from the removed material, and the particles are deposited on the surface of the substrate in such a way that the particles are at least partially exposed on the surface of the substrate. The particles deposited on the surface of the substrate contain metal or metal ions. The invention further relates to a method for coating a substrate surface pre-treated in such a way and to a method for connecting a substrate, which has a substrate surface pre-treated in such a way, to an element. The invention further relates to a pre-treatment product obtainable by means of the pre-treatment method and to products obtainable by means of the coating method and the connecting method.
