PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable valve gear for an internal combustion engine having improved durability and a simplified structure.SOLUTION: A variable valve gear for an internal combustion engine includes: a first cam portion rotating together with a cam shaft; a second cam portion that is supported by the first cam portion so as to transfer between a first state at a position protruded from the outer periphery of the first cam portion and a second state at a position lower than that of the first state; a lock mechanism for locking the second cam portion in the first and second states; and a second cam portion energizing member for energizing the second cam portion to become the first state by using energizing force transferring to the second state when reaction force from a valve is applied to the second cam portion in the unlocked state.
