PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ionically conductive polymer for use in a fuel cell and other electrochemical devices, which can provide a polymer electrolyte membrane having high proton conductivity under low relative temperature and/or high temperature.SOLUTION: Examples of the ionically conductive polymer include sulfonated poly(aryl ether sulfone) containing a benzimidazole backbone, sulfonated poly(aryl ether sulfone) containing a carboxylic acid backbone, and poly-sulfonated (aryl ether sulfone) containing a benzimidazole backbone from a carboxylic acid containing sulfonated poly(aryl ether sulfone). The polymer has intrinsic ion conducting properties, so that the polymer is effectively conductive even in low water conditions. In one embodiment, the polymer has an ionic conductivity of at least 1 x 10S/cm at a temperature of 120°C when the polymer is substantially anhydrous. |
