Disclosed is a method changing the value in a register associated with a network interface. The method starts by setting a first indicator to a first value which causes an apparatus to stop receiving data from a data source. Next the register is accessed to read or write a new value, then a second indicator set to a first value indicating that accessing of the register is completed. Finally, the first indicator is set to a second value. When the first indicator has the second value and the second indicator has the first value, the apparatus is allowed to receive data from the data source. The indicators may be flags and the register may be a control register. The register may be associated with a service. When the first indicator has the second value and the second indicator has the first value, all outstanding transactions received prior to the data being stopped will have been completed or flushed from a buffer.
