PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow a sample container to be delivered between a rack and an elevating mechanism by a simple mechanism in the case that a sample measurement chamber is provided below a rack transport surface in a sample measurement instrument.SOLUTION: An adapter 60 includes a pair of arms constituting an opening/closing mechanism 26. When a rack 14 is transported, a guide block 30 is put between a pair of legs of the rack. When the opening/closing mechanism 26 is brought into contact with the guide block 30, the opening/closing mechanism 26 performs an opening/closing operation. When the opening/closing mechanism 26 is switched from a closing state to an opening state, a sample container before measurement is delivered from a sample storage unit to an elevating mechanism. After the sample container after measurement is returned to the sample storage unit, the opening/closing mechanism 26 is switched from the opening state to the closing state. A part of force for transporting the rack 14 may be used to cause the opening/closing mechanism to perform the opening/closing movement.
