A nanopore structure includes a substrate comprising a nanochannel and a monolayer of a chemical compound disposed onto at least a portion of a surface of the nanochannel. The chemical compound forms a reversible bond with at least one analyte binding compound introduced into the nanochannel. Methods for making and using the reusable coating are also disclosed.

A method for using a re-usable coating within a nanopore structure, the method comprising: forming a monolayer of a chemical compound on a surface of a nanochannel within the nanopore structure; reacting an analyte binding compound with the chemical compound of the monolayer to form a reversible bond, wherein the analyte binding compound comprises a functional group forming the reversible bond and an analyte binding group; measuring one or more electrical signals for an event, the event being a translocation event, a binding event, or both the translocation event and the binding event; severing the reversible bond; and flushing the analyte binding compound from the nanochannel.
