A tensile band comprises at least two layers of thermoplastic material, e.g. a polyamide or a polyurethane, at least one of which is woven fabric 2, 3 of an oriented plastics material, the other layers being sheets 1 of extensible, non- compressible and non-oriented plastics material, bonded together by applying a bonding agent to the surface of the sheet 1 and heating and pressing, the thickness of the bonding agent being such that it will not penetrate the woven layer but merely cause a surface bond at 4, the resulting band having a modulus of elasticity less than 5000 kg./sq. cm. A suitable bonding agent is resorcinol which may be applied as a solution in methanol or as a powder. The warp threads 2 may have a different cross-section from the wefts 3. The woven and sheeting layers are alternated and the resulting tensile band may have other layers added, e.g. covering and friction layers such as leather and the bond may be used for flat-, V- and circular-section power transmission belts, conveyer belts and textile machine elements such as spindle tapes, web dividing tape, rubbing leathers, comber leathers, rubbing condensers and beater caps. |
