PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vehicle control device capable of effectively improving fuel efficiency and reducing exhaust gas without causing a driver to feel strangeness while traveling by following a preceding vehicle.SOLUTION: A vehicle control device 5 which performs idling stop control while traveling by following a preceding vehicle: determines whether or not a traffic signal ahead of an own vehicle is red or yellow and the preceding vehicle is in a predicted stopping state with a speed thereof being reduced on the basis of an image of a road ahead of the own vehicle captured by a stereo camera 17; sets a gain at a first gain which has a low value when determining that the preceding vehicle is in the predicted stopping state; sets the gain at a second gain which has a high value when determining that the preceding vehicle is not in the predicted stopping state; allows idling stop control to be executed when a speed of the own vehicle is larger than a calculated value obtained by multiplying the speed of the preceding vehicle by the gain set through gain setting means; and prohibits execution of the idling stop control when the speed of the own vehicle is less than the calculated value.
