A method for increasing oil recovery from a subterranean hydrocarbon reservoir comprising: recovering a produced water from the subterranean hydrocarbon reservoir and determining the salinity of the produced water; determining the relative percentages of a carbonate, a sulfate, and a clay in the subterranean hydrocarbon reservoir; altering the salinity of the produced water to create a treated produced water based on the determination of the produced water salinity and the relative percentages of the carbonate, the sulfate, and the clay in the hydrocarbon reservoir; and injecting the treated produced water into the subterranean hydrocarbon reservoir, wherein the treated produced water interacts with the subterranean hydrocarbon reservoir to produce an increase in the pH of the treated produced water at a mixing front from about 0.75 pH units to about 2.0 pH units, resulting in an improved overall hydrocarbon recovery.
