PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable object detection in a projection plane or in the vicinity of the projection plane to be accurately and easily executed.SOLUTION: A projection type display device according to the present disclosure comprises: an illumination unit that includes first and second polarization components and emits illumination light in which the first polarization component is dominant toward a polarization separation element; a light bulb that modulates the first polarization component included in the illumination light incident via the polarization separation element on the basis of picture data, and emits modulation light via the polarization separation element; a projection lens which projects the modulation light incident from the light bulb via the polarization separation element on a projection plane and to which detection light is incident from an opposite direction with respect to an advancing direction of the modulation light; an image pickup element which is arranged in a location optically conjugate with the light bulb, and to which the detection light is incident via the projection lens and the polarization separation element; and one or more optical members that are arranged between the illumination unit and the image pickup element, and reduce at least the second polarization component included in the illumination light incident to the image pickup element. |
