Cleansing compositions contain (1) surface-active, i.e C8-C24 alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl or cycloalkenyl suphonates where the alkyl or alkenyl &c. may be substituted by hydroxyl or halogen and (2) a -sulpho C8-C24 fatty acid mono or, preferably, di salts preferably in an amount 5-65% by weight of (1) + (2), sulpho fatty acid ester salts being absent. Additional anionic surfactants (3) may be present in an amount 5-65% by weight of (1) + (3), C10-C24 alkali metal soaps being preferred. Surfactant (1) may constitute at least 25% by weight of (1) + (2) + (3), and (1) + (2) may constitute 10-75% by weight of the total preparation. The preferred salts (2) have a fatty acid distribution corresponding to that occurring in the natural fats coconut, palm or palm kernel oil, tallow, or marine animal oil. The compositions may also include neutral, or alkaline-reacting salts or weakly acid-reacting compounds such as alkali metal carbonates, bicarbonates, silicates or orthophosphates, anhydrous pyropoly-and meta-phosphates, boric citric, oxalic, lactic, glycollic, tartaric or aminosulphonic acids, or sodium bisulphate; active oxygen-carrying persalts such as per-carbonates, -sulphates, -ortho, -pyro, or -poly phosphates and especially alkali metal perborates; dirt-carrying agents such as water-soluble salts of polymeric carboxylic acids, glue, gelatine, salts of ethercarboxylic acids or ether sulphonic acids of starch or cellulose, or salts of acid sulphuric acid esters of cellulose or starch; foaming agents such as fatty acid amides which may be N-substituted by alkyl- or alkylol-residues of not more than 6C, or the ethylene oxide addition products therewith. The salts present in the compositions may be derived from sodium or potassium alkalis or from C1-C6 organic basis, particularly mono-, di- or tri-ethanolamine. The preparations may be in powder, granular needle, ribbon or bead form. Specification 996,677, which is referred to, describes and claims compositions comprising a salt of an ester of a C10-C24 a -sulpho fatty acid (said ester being formed with a monohydric C1-C18 alcohol or a polyhydric C2-C4 alcohol) and a salt of a C10-C24 a -sulpho fatty acid.
