The invention comprises sulphoxides having the formula or in which R1 is a group of structive or R12 is hydrogen or a C1-C5 alkyl group and X is hydrogen, halogen, a C1-C5 alkyl group, a C1-C5 alkoxy group, a dialkylamino group containing 1-5 carbon atoms in each alkyl substituent or a diarylamino group containing up to 10 carbon atoms in each aryl substituent. The group R1 may carry substituents, e.g. chlorine, bromine, methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, methoxy, ethoxy, propoxy, butoxy, dimethylamino, diethylamino or di-(n-propyl) amino, on the benzene ring. The new compounds may be prepared by reacting at a temperature below 30 DEG C. a phenyl-acetylenic compound of formula with an alkyl sulphinyl carbanion having the formula and derived from a dialkylsulphoxide and an alkali metal hydride. The alkyl sulphinyl carbanion may be formed in situ. The reaction is carried out under anhydrous conditions in an inert atmosphere. Numerous phenyl-acetylene compounds which may be used as starting materials are given.
