1,258,138. Golf ball. A. G. SPALDING & BROS. Inc. 24 Feb., 1969 [12 Aug., 1968], No. 9871/69. Heading A6D. A golf ball consists of a solid centre of moulded elastomeric material covered with a thin winding of thread of elastomeric material, both materials preferably being natural or synthetic rubber. A one piece, seamless cover is injection moulded over the centre, this cover being an ionomer resin, i.e. a copolymer of a major proportion of an α-olefin with an α, /3-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid having preferably 3 to 8 carbon atoms, the copolymer having from 10% to 90% by weight of the acid groups ionized by neutralization by metal ions. A preferred α-olefin is ethylene. Titanium dioxide may be incorporated. in the resin to improve the whiteness of the cover and eliminate the use of paint. Alternatively the cover can be painted, in which case it is etched to help the coat of polyurethane paint adhere to it. |
