1,129,438. Bonded electrodes and separators. SOC. DES ACCUMULATEURS FIXES ET DE TRACTION. 22 Feb., 1967 [23 Feb., 1966], No. 8571/67. Heading H1B. The invention comprises electrodes the surfaces of which have affixed to them separators composed of fibres of insulating material oriented at right-angles to the surfaces. The fibres may be nylon and may have a diameter of up to a few tenths of a millimeter and a length of up to a few millimeters, e.g. 0À5 mm. They may be coloured, to indicate polarity or date of manufacture of the electrode, and may be oriented by means of an electrostatic technique and affixed by an adhesive, e.g. a polyvinyl alcohol based adhesive. The electrodes may be used in a sealed Ni/Cd alkaline accummulator in which the electrodes are separated by up to 0À3 mm. In 3 embodiments all electrodes are coated with fibres on one side only, the electrodes of one polarity are coated on both sides whilst those of opposite polarity are uncoated or all electrodes are coated on both sides. In Fig. 2 (not shown) the electrodes comprise supports of Ni-plated perforated steel sheet coated on both sides with sintered Ni impregnated with active material, i.e. mixed nickel and cobalt hydroxides for the nickel electrode and cadmium hydroxide for the cadmium electrode. Fibres are stuck on both sides of both electrodes. |
