Provided are thermally expanding microcapsules which have a high expansion factor, durability at high temperatures, and which are resistant to discoloration and generating unpleasant odors when used in foaming. The present invention pertains to thermally expanding microcapsules obtained by encapsulating a volatile expanding agent as a core agent, in a shell made from a polymer, wherein the shell is obtained by polymerizing a monomer composition containing a nitrile monomer and a compound having a glycidyl group in the molecule. For the shell, if the gel fraction at room temperature is defined as x and the gel fraction after heating for 30 minutes at 180°C is defined as y, y is at least 50%, and y/x is at least 1.1. |
