A permanent magnet embedded electric motor (1) is provided with a stator (3) and a rotor (5). The rotor (5) has a rotor core (11) constituted by laminating a plurality of sheet members. In the rotor core (11), a plurality of magnet insertion holes (21) are formed, into which corresponding permanent magnets (19) are inserted. At least one slit (72) and at least one caulking (76) are formed in the rotor (5) between the outer circumferential surface (25) of the rotor and the radial direction outside insertion hole contour surface (55) of the magnet insertion hole (21). At least a part of the caulking (76) is positioned between a pair of the width extended lines (WE) of the slit (72).
