A carbon-containing material according to the present invention has a sheet-like shape. The carbon-containing material is provided with a sheet material made from amorphous carbon. The carbon-containing material is also provided with an active layer that contains a non-metal atom comprising at least one atom selected from a nitrogen atom, a boron atom, a sulfur atom and a phosphorus atom and a metal atom. It is preferred that the carbon-containing material is porous. It is also preferred that the sheet material comprises a woven or non-woven fabric made from amorphous carbon.
