The light intensity detecting unit may comprise a light emitting element 11 and a light detecting element 12. Further disclosed is a method for sensing an aerosol during a puff of an e-cigarette comprising generating the aerosol, detecting a light intensity of the aerosol, deriving the flow speed based on the light intensity and pressure, determining the puff duration and then deriving the volume of the aerosol during the puff. Further disclosed is an atomizer for an electronic smoking device with an aerosol sensing unit. Further disclosed is an electronic cigarette comprising an aerosol sensing unit and controller wherein the controller is arranged to derive a mass flow rate of vapour flowing through the chamber based on light intensity and pressure.
