A structure, which in the embodiments described is a punching sub-set comprises outer and inner mounting members 14 and 17 respectively, each cylindrical in shape, and two diaphragms 22 and 23 secured to the mounting members, so thatlinear movement can occur between the members, by deflection of the diaphragms. The diaphragms 22 and 23 are secured to the cylinder 14 by clamping rings 24 and 25 and are attached at their centres to the cylinder 17 by pins 28 and 29, which each have an enlarged head 30 and 31 respectively for engagement by a suitable mechanism for applying a pulsating force to the cylinder 17. A mounting 32 for a punch 33 is fastened to the cylinder 17 and a mounting 34 for a die 35 is fastened to the cylinder 14. There are access openings 36 and 37 in the inner and outer mounting members to enable the work material to be fed into and out of the die-set and a shoot 38 extends into the interior of the cylinders through openings 39 and 40 to convey the punchings to a station outside the die-set. In a modification the diaphragms are replaced by rectangular section bars with the smaller dimension disposed parallel to the longitudinal axes of the cylinders. The longitudinal axes of the bars may be parallel or at right angles to each other. In a second modification the diaphragms are replaced by members having a centre section and four or six radiating arms, Fig. 5 (not shown). In a third modification both the cylinders are of square cross-section. In a fourth modification the inner cylinder is stationary, Fig. 6 (not shown) and the outer cylinder reciprocates. In a punching press, Fig. 7 (not shown) the frame (41), (42), (43), (44) is of built-up construction and constitutes the outer cylinder and the inner cylinder is built-up of two rectangular end plates (47 and 48) connected by corner posts (51). A ram (52) is connected to the inner member by bolts (53).</p> |
