A method of making superconducting niobium-zirconium alloy wire comprises the steps of heat treating a niobium-zirconium material with a refined crystal structure in an inert atmosphere at a temperature of 1000 DEG C.-1250 DEG C. for 30-120 minutes, quenching the material, working the material at a temperature below 500 DEG C., heat treating the material in an inert atmosphere at a temperature of 750 DEG C.-825 DEG C. for 15-130 minutes, enclosing the material in a sheath of a different material housing similar working properties, deforming the material and the sheath to the required cross-section of the material, dissolving the sheath, and copper plating the material. An example of the production of wire 0.010 inches diameter from an ingot containing 27.8% zirconium is given, the sheath was made from "Inconel" (Registered Trade Mark) which was dissolved using an electrolytic process. Before copper plating the wire it was degreased etched in 10% hydrofluoric acid at 38 DEG C. and hydrided electrolytically in 2% hydrofluoric acid at a current density of 40 amps per square foot followed by a nickel flash plating and copper plating. The refined crystal structure was produced by hot working the ingot. |
