A method of controlling oil pressure in the rotor end seals of a hydrogen-cooled generator by decreasing or augmenting the flow of oil (or other fluid) to the seals when the oil pressure in the seals is increased or decreased respectively. In Fig. 2 a pressure regulator comprises a vertical three piston valve sliding in an apertured bush 8 and oil passes continuously from inlet pipe 23, through apertures 11 in the bush, passages 18 in the central piston 15, apertures 10 in the bush, chamber 24 and pipe 25. Passage of oil through passages 18 rotates the valve to prevent it sticking in bush 8. The lower surface of lower piston 16 is acted on by outlet oil of the regulator and the upper surface of upper piston 14 by hydrogen from the generator stator and by a weight 17. Thus increase of oil pressure in the seals moves valve 13 upward, piston 16 covering apertures 12 and piston 14 uncovering apertures 9 so that some of the oil from passages 18 drains through apertures 9 and pipe 26. Decrease in oil pressure moves valve 13 downwards so that apertures 9 are covered and apertures 12 opened allowing flow from pipe 23 through bush 8 to chamber 24 and pipe 25.</p> |
