An image pickup apparatus for processing signals obtained from an image sensor that includes a plurality of pixels in each of which a first photoelectric conversion unit and a second photoelectric conversion unit are provided, the image pickup apparatus comprising: a computing unit which computes a shift amount, which is used for focus detection based on the phase-difference detection method, between a first image signal that is obtained from outputs of the first photoelectric conversion units and a second image signal that is obtained from outputs of the second photoelectric conversion units; and a unit which performs focus control of an imaging lens on the basis of the shift amount, wherein the computing unit computes the shift amount from an amount of correlation based on a difference value between the first image signal and the second image signal, the difference value being computed by shifting relative positions between the first image signal and the second image signal, and computes the amount of correlation, if the difference value is not less than a predetermined upper limit, using a predetermined value that is not more than the upper limit as the difference value.
