Novel 4 - (2<SP>1</SP>- tetrahydrofurfuryloxycarbonyl-phenylaminochloroquinolines of the general formula wherein the chlorine atom is in the 7- or 8- position of the quinoline nucleus, and therapeutically compatible addition salts thereof with organic or inorganic acids are prepared by the transesterification of a 4-(2<SP>1</SP>-alkoxycarbonylphenylamino)-chloroquinoline of the general formula wherein R is an alkyl group containing 1-5 carbon atoms and the chlorine atom is in the 7- or 8-position of the quinoline nucleus, with tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol, followed by optional conversion of the product to a therapeutically compatible addition salt thereof with an organic or inorganic acid. Pharmaceutical compositions having analgesic and anti-inflammatory activity comprise as active ingredient at least one 4-(2<SP>1</SP>-tetrahydrofurfuryloxy - carbonyl - phenylamino) - chloroquinoline of the first formula above or a therapeutically compatible addition salt thereof with an organic or inorganic acid in association with a pharmaceutical carrier or excipient.</p> |
