A camera is provided in which polarimetric and multispectral modalities are used simultaneously for remote sensing, or for detecting and identifying objects or targets by their measured polarisation and spectra. The camera includes an optical arrangement that provides separated images of different polarisations V & H on a single focal plane sensor array. An optical filter such as a one dimensional spatially varying filter (1DSVF) may be located in front of the sensor array and may be arranged to ensure that each corresponding pixel in the separated, polarised images has the same wavelength filtration. The two images on the sensor may be analysed to provide a figure for the degree of polarisation (DoP) from signal values on corresponding pixels, the figure being found from a system of few pixels, thus allowing a small sensor package. The loss of spatial resolution arising from having separate H & V polarised images on the sensor can be mitigated by arranging for the two images to be separated on the sensor with consideration given to the pixel pitch, pixel size and image separation. The camera may be used in photonics and computational imaging. |
