The present invention relates to a washing machine and a control method thereof. According to an embodiment of the present invention, the washing machine comprises: a cabinet forming the external appearance of the washing machine; a tube placed inside the cabinet and having washing water stored therein; a rotational drum arranged in the tube to accommodate laundry in the tub; a drive device rotating the rotational drum; an auxiliary washing drum placed inside the rotational drum, and coupled to the rotational drum to be able to be detached from the rotational drum; a balancer coupled to the auxiliary washing drum and placed on the upper part of the tub; a coupling unit placed on one side of the auxiliary drum to make the auxiliary drum be attached and detached from the balancer; and a coupling unit-containing unit placed on one or more sides of the balancer, and has a shape corresponding to the coupling unit. The washing machine is provided to make laundry be input into the rotational drum and the auxiliary washing drum while washing the laundry at the same time; and have strong coupling power to prevent the auxiliary washing drum from escaping even during the operation by having an improved coupling structure between the auxiliary drum and the rotational drum.
