Provided are plasma-treated binders for use in filtration media comprising sorbent media. Plasma treatment can use silane, oxygen, or both. Plasma-treated binders can be charge-modified with the addition of an anti-microbial agent. The filtration media can be used to make matrixes and systems. Methods of making and using the same are also provided.

1. A method of filtering comprising:
contacting a fluid with a filtration media comprising:
an adsorptive media comprising activated carbon comprising particles having an average particle size of greater than 43 micron, the activated carbon being present in the filtration media in an amount in the range of 50 to 85% by weight; andplasma-pre-treated, hydrophilic, polymeric binder particles adherent to the adsorptive media whose the surfaces are oxidized and comprise silicon oxides, the binder particles comprising ultra high molecular weight polyethylene comprising particles having an irregular, convoluted surface, the polyethylene binder being present in the filtration media in an amount in the range of 10 to 30% by weight; and. reducing cyst content of the fluid:
