The scanner (10) has a light transmitter (12) that transmits the light signals (14). A light deflection unit (18) deflects the transmitted light signals of the light transmitter to a surveillance area (20). A light receiver (26) receives the back light (22) emitted by an object located in the surveillance area. A control unit (32) generates and/or influences the light signals transmitted by the light transmitter in the surveillance area, and outputs the modulated signal having more zeros than ones. An independent claim is included for a method for monitoring a surveillance area.
