A computer-implemented method for automatically retrieving information regarding optical properties of a scattering medium, comprising: receiving data, into a memory of at least one computer, of a first digital image, the data including data of a first value of at least one optical parameter associated with a first optical transfer function associated with the first digital image; receiving data, into the memory, of a first image quality value associated with the first digital image and sharpness of at least one edge of the first digital image; producing, by instructions executing in the at least one computer, an optimized image based on a pre-selected optical transfer function restoring the first digital image; transforming data, by instructions executing in the at least one computer, of the optimized image into data of an associated optimized optical transfer function; receiving data, into the memory, of a second digital image, the data including data of a second value of the at least one optical parameter associated with a second optical transfer function associated with the second digital image; receiving data, into the memory, of a second image quality value associated with the second digital image and sharpness of at least one edge of the second digital image; identifying, by instructions executing in the at least one computer, one of the first and second digital images as an optimized digital image based on the first and second image quality values; and transforming, by instructions executing in the at least one computer, data of the optimized optical transfer function into data of an optimized value of the at least one optical parameter, the optimized value being associated with an optical property of the scattering medium, the scattering medium being associated with the at least one optical parameter.
