1,242,735. Polysaccharide ethers. J. B. SJOVALL, E. H. NYSTROM, and J. ELLING- BOE. 16 Dec., 1968 [18 Dec., 1967], No. 59745/68. Headings C3A and C3U. [Also in Division C2] Polysaccharide ethers are made by reacting, in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst and an inert organic non-aqueous non-alcoholic solvent, an organic C 3-30 epoxy compound with a reaction product of a polysaccharide with an organic C 2-8 epoxy compound, the reaction product containing at least one C 1-8 hydroxyalkyl, -aryl or -aralkyl group and being at least swellable in organic non-aqueous non-alcoholic solvents. The product ethers are solvated or swellable by non-polar organic solvents and are hydrophobic. In examples hydroxypropylated cross-linked dextran or hydroxyethylhydroxypropyl cellulose are reacted with mixed C 11-18 olefin oxides or propylene oxide; in one ease a subsequent reaction with phenylethylene oxide is effected. Boron trifluoride, preferably as its diethyl etherate is a suitable catalyst. A cellulose ether is made dy refluxing alkali cellulose with ethylene and propylene oxides simultaneously. |
