[Also in Division E1] A fire-resistant composite element having two major and a plurality of minor surfaces comprises a 5-layer sandwich construction in which the central layer consists of one or more alkali metal silicate sheets and contains 20-70% by weight of water, the intermediate layers are of expanded organic plastics material and the outer layers are of mechanically stable non-combustible material, and spacing means made of non- combustible material which, alone or together with the two non-combustible outer layers, covers at least two opposed minor surfaces. The plastics layers may be of foamed styrene, vinyl chloride or vinylidene chloride polymer or copolymer, phenolic resin or polyurethane and the outer layers may be of asbestos cement which may be vitrified or combined with aluminium, or of steel sheet. The silicate sheets may contain non-combustible fibres such as chopped strand glass fibres. The edges of the silicate sheets and plastics layers may be set back relative to the outer layers on the uncovered minor surfaces to form a groove to accommodate a key for joining two elements together. The key and groove may be sealed by a U-section of heat-resisting material.</p> |
