559,046. Welded ships. JEFCOATE, R. V. April 28, 1942, No. 5697. Drawings to Specification. [Class 113 (ii)] Part or the whole of a ship is built up from a number of pre-fabricated standardised cellular steel units welded together in lateral and superposed relation to form compartments of substantial size for accommodation, storage, ballast and other purposes. Different sizes of units are employed, and whilst most of them are of parallelopipedal shape, others may be pyramidal or include curved surfaces. They may be strengthened by stiffeners and/or gussets, they may have openings with fixed or movable closure members; and they may be formed with anchorages for other parts of the ship. An extended slipway may be employed to accommodate two or more ships in line, so that they can be built up in stages and moved forwards as in a conveyer system.
|
