Provided is a liquid crystal aligning agent to form a liquid crystal alignment layer capable of properly expressing various characteristics required for a liquid crystal display device. The liquid crystal aligning agent includes at least one kind of polymer (P) selected from the group consisting of polyamic acid, polyamic acid ester and polyimide, wherein the polymer (P) is obtained by making diamine comprising a compound represented by formula (1) react with a tetracarboxylic acid derivative. (R^A is a divalent group having an oxygen atom or a sulfur atom in at least one position among the position of a carbon-carbon bond between two hydrocarbon groups and a position adjacent to the hydrocarbon group, and X^1 and X^2 each independently represent a single bond, an oxygen atom, a sulfur atom or a divalent organic group).
