Polymerizable syrups having a viscosity of 0.1 to 50 poises at 25 DEG C. are made by dissolving (A) poly-(alpha-methylstyrene or a polymer mixture containing a preponderance thereof or a copolymer consisting predominantly of alphamethylstyrene units in (B) methyl methacrylate or a mixture thereof with a comonomer such as styrene and its alpha-methyl derivative, ethyl and allyl methacrylates, diallyl melamine, cyanurate, phthalate, maleate and fumarate, triallyl cyanurate, itaconic acid and dimethyl itaconate. Polymerization may be carried out with the aid of benzoyl peroxide and azobisisobutyronitrile as catalysts. Glass fibres may be incorporated in the syrups, which are then polymerized to form reinforced bodies. The examples polymerizing syrups containing poly-(alpha-methylstyrene) and mixtures thereof with polymethyl methacrylate, and a styrene/ alpha-methylstyrene copolymer dissolved in methyl methacrylate and mixtures thereof with alpha-methylstyrene, triallyl cyanurate, diallyl phthalate allyl methacrylate and diallyl itaconate. The Specification describes also polymerizing alpha-methylstyrene in solution in hexane in the presence of finely divided potassium metal. |
