In a face type seal for a rotary shaft B comprising a sealing ring 2 carried at one end of a bellows 1 of plastics material and engaging a member A attached to the shaft, a rigid sleeve 6 extends within the bellows and is coupled at one end to the sealing ring 2 and fixed at its other end with the other end of the bellows so that in use the bellows is not subjected to torque. The ring 2 is a push fit in a recess 1D in the bellows and the sleeve 6 has a tongue 6A which extends through an aperture in a flange 1A of the bellows and engages a recess 6B in the ring 2. The bellows and sleeve 6 are secured by bolts 10 engaging a clamp ring 4 to a sleeve 5 secured by bolts 14 to a pump casing P; rotation of the sleeve 6 being prevented by a pin 9. A support ring 3 is located in the corner of the recess 1D by a bent-over portion 1C. The sealing ring 2 is urged against the member A by a spring 8 compressed between a flange 5A of sleeve 5 and a washer 7 abutting flange 1A. The bellows 1 is formed from P.T.F.E. and glass impregnated at each end. The sealing ring 2 and member A may be of carbon and ceramic or stainless steel respectively. |
