[Also in Division G1] Apparatus for collecting and analysing exhaled alveolar gas comprises an inflatable container 10 having a filling orifice which has a device permitting air to flow out of the container as exhaled air flows into it and the closure of the container at the end of the exhalation, the container being connected to a testing device 17. In apparatus for determining the amount of alcohol in the blood and alveolar air of a person, the inflatable bag 10 has a flattened tube 12 sealed into one end so that it extends from the interior to the exterior of the bag. Opposite sides of the tube are partially sealed together along lines 15,16 or by circular welds (Figure 3 not shown). An open-ended tube 17 of yellow potassium bichromate is sealed into the other end of the bag so that one end communicates with the interior of the bag and the other end communicates with a closed chamber 21. In use, one end of a blow tube 22 is inserted into the bag through the flattened tube 12 thus separating the sides of the latter. The person under test exhales into the bag through the blow tube, air escaping from the bag through the flattened tube during the exhalation period. At the end of the exhalation the blow tube is removed and the sides of the flattened tube 12 are pressed together to seal the bag by the pressure of gas remaining in the bag i.e. the alveolar air. The chamber 21 is then opened and alveolar air esacapes to atmosphere through the potassium bichromate. Alcohol in the escaping air turns the potassium bichromate to the green ehromate progressively from the inlet end 19 of the tube. When all the air has escaped, the line of separation between the yellow and green colour indicates the percentage of alcohol in the alveolar air. In an alternative construction, the flattened tube is replaced by a rigid tube (Figure 2 not shown) having a valve seated on the end which is in the bag. The valve is opened and closed by the insertion and withdrawal of the blow pipe respectively in the rigid tube. |
