A method of preventing or decreasing excessive accumulation of fibrous material within the extracellular matrix in injured or damaged tissue of a subject comprising identifying a subject in need thereof, and administering to the subject an anti-connexin 43 polynucleotide, thereby preventing or decreasing excessive accumulation of fibrous material within the extracellular matrix in said tissue of said subject, wherein the tissue is skin tissue, brain tissue, nerve tissue, lung tissue, cardiac tissue, kidney tissue, or liver tissue.
