1,189,130. Seats. ROYAL COLLEGE OF ART. 29 June, 1967, No. 30123/67. Heading A4M. A seat comprises a hollow, ball-like or spherical shell 1 with a separately or integrally formed base 4, the shell comprising resiliently deformable, foam plastics material having upper and lower planes 7, 7<SP>1</SP> and 8, 8<SP>1</SP> of reduced thickness to define weakened wall sections. The seat is such that in the unloaded condition it retains its ball-like shape but when loaded by a seated person, as in Fig. 3, the shell deforms by hinging about its weakened sections so that its domed top 3 forms a back-rest 10 and the portion 2 between the hinge sections 7, 7<SP>1</SP> and 8, 8<SP>1</SP> forms a seat surface 9. The deformation also provides armrests 11. The domed top 3 may have a uniform thickness or a varying thickness which is a maximum at its centre. The seat forming section may comprise a plurality of petal-shaped panels 2 (Fig. 1) secured together at their adjacent edges. In further embodiments (Figs. 7-9), central, vertical, resilient cores (12, 17) assist the return of the shell to its ball-like shape when unloaded. The base 4 may comprise wood, rigid plastics, metal or foamed material, or may be inflated. The shell may be secured to the base 4 by blocks 5 and a locating ring 6.
