PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of reducing switching loss (power consumption) of a switching element for turning ON and OFF a light source for image reading, and an image formation apparatus with the same.SOLUTION: An image reader includes: a light source; a synchronizing signal generation unit which generates a synchronizing signal; an illumination control unit which performs control to turn ON and OFF the light source in synchronism with the synchronizing signal; and a sensor unit which receives reflected light from a document irradiated with light and generates a one-dimensional electric signal. The control unit repeats the irradiation with light by the light source and the generation of the electric signal by the sensor unit, and turns ON the light source when a first time t1 elapses after a rise of the synchronizing signal in an odd-numbered cycle and turns OFF the light source when a second time t2 elapses after a rise of the synchronizing signal in a next even-numbered cycle. Consequently, the number of times of turning-ON and turning-OFF of a switching element of the light source can be made less than in conventional image readers and switching loss can be reduced. |
