Carbon (graphtie) fibres of high elasticity, modulus and tenacity, suitable for C fibre strips for fibre/resin articles, are produced by subjecting PAN filaments of 1-5 den. to (a) partial oxidation in oxidising atm. pref. air, at 200-300 degrees C for less than 4 hrs; (b) further oxidation at 300-375 degrees C at rate which is at least 10 times faster than in first oxidation, where this rate is measured through dwelling-period under oxidation conditions, until complete infusibility is attained; and (c) quick pyrolysis/graphitising heat treatment in non-oxidising atm. at 1000-2500 degrees C. Pref. filamentary PAN is stretched at 100 degrees C before oxidation, and pref. the continuous filaments are led over cold guide rolls during oxidation.
|
